To develop God-given talents and gifts and instill the confidence and faith to SHINE for the glory of God.

The vision of the S.H.I.N.E. (Seeking Him IN Everything) Performing Arts Program is to bring people together – both children and adults – to learn, collaborate, fellowship, encourage growth and service in the Christian faith, and witness God’s presence working within all of us.

CHEY SANDERS  |  Director
Chey has an undergraduate degree in theatre education from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and two master’s degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (master of communications in radio/television/film and a master of arts in marriage and family counseling). Chey feels very blessed to have done her student teaching under Ron Bright. She has served as a drama director for several churches, director of education for Creative Arts Theatre & School, head acting coach for Actors, Models and Talent for Christ, and acting instructor for Transformational Film Institute. Chey believes that many Christians are called to the arts but few have followed. She has seen a rise in Hollywood of faith and family-based films. There is a hunger for truth and wholesome entertainment. God is using Christians who are faithfully challenging and growing their talents. Just like an athlete needs to constantly be honing their skills, Christian actors need to keep their skills sharp. “Don’t give God junk. Give Him YOUR best. Shine a light in the dark places.” Chey is thrilled when she sees the members of the family of God using their gifts to bring honor and glory to God.

CHERYL TOMA SANDERS  |  Musical Director and Producer
Cheryl has many years of professional experience as a pianist, vocalist, and dancer, both nationally and internationally, as well as teaching music, directing choirs, and coordinating and leading worship services. She has also done work in television, feature films, and commercials. Cheryl continues to use her talent leading the worship at Wai‘alae Baptist Church and performing locally with the singing group, The Liberty Belles. The former Miss Hawai‘i also teaches voice and piano and serves as the director of the Wai‘alae Arts Center and S.H.I.N.E. Performing Arts Summer Program at the church. She has bachelor’s degrees in music education and elementary education from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa and has done post-graduate work at Oberlin University, the University of Hawai‘i, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. In addition to her passion for God and music, Cheryl has a heart to use the creative arts and music to develop ministry potential in all people.

KAMI WAKABAYASHI  |  Choreographer

She recently choreographed Seussical JR for CPAC, and was choreographer for Annie JR at CPAC’s KidStart program and the S.H.I.N.E. 2017 Performing Arts Camp. Kami has worked at Diamond Head Theatre (DHT), the place where she began performing at the age of 7 and was also a member of the DHT Shooting Stars. She has trained extensively at the Honolulu Dance Studio and DHT in Jazz, Ballet, Tap, and Contemporary. Kami has performed in stage productions, both locally and on the mainland, and has experience as an assistant director, dramaturg, and assistant stage manager. She has a bachelor of arts in dance and theatre with a concentration in theatre education from Manhattanville College in New York.
